This short video "Transitions" features artist Lyn Striegel as she discusses her art and influences.
Lyn Striegel's new work represents a breakthrough. Her primary art heroes, Pollack, Rothko and O'Keefe, all focused on color, line and balance. Of the three, Pollacks technique is the closest to what Lyn uses. But, where Pollack placed the paint on the canvas in a random but deliberate way, Lyn places the color on the canvas and allows the painting to paint itself-- with a little help.

The current work requires tremendous energy -- paint is applied to the canvas in many layers and color combinations. The paint itself moves on the canvas to create combinations of shapes and colors. Lyn manipulates and assists the process. The attempt is made not to intervene, but to apply just the right amount of balance to the canvas. No brushes are used in the technique, but paint is applied as the shapes emerge on the canvas.
Some paintings achieve the desired effect relatively quickly after a few hours. Others take weeks. The paintings require the viewers attention. The viewer contributes his or her life experiences to the work, calling to mind whatever is suggested by the color, line and balance. Each painting is simple but infinitely complex, reflecting our world.
The technique Lyn uses has no name -- the closest analogy would be to ontological literary criticism, being the theory that the work speaks for itself. The paintings also have no names. They are numbered only to allow the viewer to decide what he or she sees in the work. The paintings are not signed on the front but only on the back so they may be hung however the viewer decides. Lyn makes no decisions for the viewers approach to the work.
All paintings are done in acrylic on canvas. The canvas sizes range from 16 x 20 up to 40 x 60. Prints of the entire work or sections of the canvas are available framed or unframed. Please allow 3 to 6 weeks for delivery of prints.
Profile
I have been an artist and student of art for as long as I can remember. I started drawing caricatures for my parents friends. By the age of 10, I was studying art with various teachers. In high school, I won some art prizes and was allowed to skip classes and paint outside. In college, I continued my art studies. My travels have invariably ended up in art galleries, museums and local craft shops. I have studied the Dutch Masters, Impressionist paintings, modern art, graffiti, and crafts. The strength of my connection to what I have seen and studied results in my interpretation of these master works.
I paint in North Beach, Maryland on the picturesque Chesapeake Bay. My love for painting is matched by my interest in travel and my paintings reflect what I have seen and felt about the Chesapeake Bay, China, Central America, the American Southwest, Africa, and other wonderful places.
My work, primarily in oil and acrylic on canvas, is focused on line and color. I consider color emotional-- what I put on the canvas is what I feel. It's not an intellectual pursuit, but deeply reflective of the inner me. I consider every painting a self-portrait, no matter the subject. In addition to oil and acrylic, I work in chalk, crayon, and everything that helps me express what I must express. My hope is that my work connects with others in the same way, that others will see themselves in the work.
